For Art Antwerp, Martins&Montero proposes a solo exhibition by Brazilian artist Lia D Castro. The artist reflects on gender and race hierarchies, art history and transphobia. The paintings are a powerful call to action, emphasising the importance of representation and inclusivity. Besides her artistic practices, Lia D Castro has worked as sex worker, educator, transgender rights activist and gives anti-racism and anti-transphobia lectures at art institutions. The artist will produce new paintings from two on-going series. “To our Children”; portraits with her lovers and clients, with whom she establishes a relationship of intimacy and commitment. She invites us to enter the scenes, which in no way reflect the social stigma that sex workers carry. “Crossing the Rubicon”; a series of still-life flowers and a self-portrait. The size of the paintings represents the lifespan of a trans individual in Brazil. The colour contrasts serve as a mirror for the physical and mental transformation that accompanies hormone therapy. The works are a poignant reminder that even in the face of adversity, life can be beautiful and worth celebrating.
